A love letter to Glasgow

Famous comedian Billy Connolly said the following about his hometown of Glasgow:

"Comedy, like drama, is about conflict and Glasgow is my city of conflict. The views, the sounds, the smells of these streets are jammed with memories of have being cold and warm. In love and heartbroken; crying with laughter and regret. I love Glasgow, but that love has always been matched with an urge to leave to see over the horizon and that pull has made me a proud citizen of the world. Yet there's always been a string in my heart that I'm glad pulls me back to where I'm from, to all the things that made me; good and bad. Scotland. It's beautiful place and when the waters gone over the sand at the bottom ourselves turquoise, it looks like the Caribbean."

TASK!

How do you feel after reading Billy Connolly’s Love Letter to Scotland? Write a few sentences below of what it has made you think and feel.

Have a go at writing a few descriptive paragraphs about your own home town.

You might want to think about -

  • If you were to go for a walk about your local area, what would your senses experience? What can you hear, see, smell, touch?
  • What are your favourite memories of where you live? When you think about them, how do they make you feel?
  • Do you enjoy living in your town? If yes, what do you love about it? If no, where would you rather be and why?

Now have a go at answering some questions about the passage.
